About Brown Summer High School

Brown Summer High School (BSHS) is an enrichment program that provides motivated local students a chance to pursue study in areas that interest them most. As a 3-week enrichment program, BSHS challenges students to think critically about big questions. Courses are offered in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

I had the privilege of co-teaching an English course with another MAT candidate, Callie Bouton, and our wonderful mentor, Sofia Dias.

Course Description

Our core text for our BSHS course was Pet by Akwaeke Emezi. We looked at and unpacked the topic of justice, asking the Essential Question: What is justice and who decides? We covered literary devices including theme, topic, sensory imagery, and characterization.

We also worked with students on developing their reading, writing, and academic speaking/conversation skills. For their final project, students wrote a personal narrative about one of the following: 1) a talent or interest that is meaningful to them, 2) a time when they faced a challenge, or 3) a time when they questioned a belief or idea. They also participated in multiple discussions about passages from Pet, working to build on one another’s ideas
