Crooks Farm has been selling produce at the Woonsocket Farmers Market for several years, but for Matthew (in the green apron)—a long-time customer of the farm—this is his first year running the stand.
I've been going to Crooks Farm since I was three years old. Crooks Farm is owned by the Cook family. They have been running the farm since 1750. It's one of the longest active farms in the country. I believe at this point they're in their 13th generation.
When I was a kid, we'd always go there. I grew up in Wrentham. So the farm's in Wrentham. That's how I've known them. I've been, actually, every week for years. Our own family would get our fresh produce from there. We'd drive there on Sunday, we'd get our vegetables and fruits. And then depending on the time of year, cook meals based on what they had as far as vegetables and fruits go. So I've just known them for a while. They're always looking for extra help and things of that nature.
At this market, we try to get people fresh produce, vegetables, fruit of that nature, through the partnerships that are subsidized through the state. Obviously, we’re trying to get people that might not be able to maybe get this type of food on a daily basis into their diets. So they will come here because it's subsidized through the state. They're able to get fresh produce every Tuesday here. The people that come here, they love it.
