Reading and Accelerated Reader
Welcome to Bridgemary LRC!
Working with the Hampshire School Library Service, Bridgemary School offers quality library provision in a large, purpose built Learning Resource Centre, with the aim of encouraging and enabling our students to develop a lifelong love of reading for pleasure.
In the LRC, we have over 6000 books to choose from. Our fiction collection, which is regularly updated with the latest titles, has plenty to suit all interests and abilities and includes graphic novels, manga and quick reads. We also have a large selection of non fiction books and magazines covering a broad range of subjects. Students may borrow up to two books at a time for a two-week loan period. In addition, students have access to 1000s more eBooks, audiobooks, eComics and eMagazines completely free of charge on our eBook platform which they can access anytime, anywhere on any mobile, tablet, laptop or PC.
Bridgemary LRC has PCs, Chromebooks, and a projector and is available for use as an additional teaching space or for meetings and events.
Years 7, 8 and 9 have a timetabled English lesson in the LRC once a fortnight, when they take part in Accelerated Reader and enjoy time reading for pleasure. The LRC is also open before and after school and at break-times for any students wishing to come in and browse or read, return or borrow books, play chess, or use the PCs. Our LSA team run a homework club in the LRC every afternoon after school until 4pm.

Accelerated Reader
This year Bridgemary School will be using the Accelerated Reader scheme.
What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?
AR is a computer program that helps teachers and librarians manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice.
Your child picks a book at his or her own level and reads it at their own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.)
AR gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher and librarian then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.
Children using AR choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.
A reward system is put in place to encourage students to read and enjoy books.
