As we continue our efforts to provide the best educational experience for our students, one area of growing concern is the influence of cell phones and social media on student success. Our schools are seeing an increasing number of students who display addictive tendencies with these devices, leading to challenges in both academic performance and social development. We need your support as parents to help monitor and guide responsible use of smartphones and social media at home.
Research shows that excessive use of cell phones and social media can have a negative impact on students’ ability to focus and succeed in school. In fact, a recent report by ExcelinEd highlights that students who spend too much time scrolling through social media are less likely to perform well academically. The constant distractions of notifications, endless feeds, and the pressure to stay connected can take away precious time from study and rest, leading to poor learning outcomes. The study emphasizes the importance of limiting screen time, suggesting that schools and families work together to encourage more time for reading, critical thinking, and real-life interaction.
In addition to academic concerns, cell phone and social media use has been linked to increased stress, anxiety, and social isolation. A recent article from Education Week underscores that excessive phone use can exacerbate mental health issues, particularly among younger students. Many educators report that banning cell phones in classrooms has led to reduced stress levels and better engagement during lessons.
At Breckenridge Middle and High School, we have implemented strategies to limit phone use during instructional time. Cell phones are only allowed in classrooms when approved by the teacher for educational purposes. This ensures that students remain focused on learning and are not distracted by non-academic phone use. While we are addressing this issue in our schools, the role you play as parents is critical. Monitoring and limiting the use of these devices at home can greatly contribute to reducing your child’s anxiety and improving their social interactions.
We understand that smartphones are a part of modern life, but helping students find balance is essential. Here are a few tips you can implement at home to support your child:
Set clear boundaries: Establish specific times and places where phone use is not allowed, such as during homework time, family meals, or before bed.
Monitor social media accounts: Be aware of which platforms your child uses and talk with them regularly about responsible online behavior.
Encourage real-life interaction: Create opportunities for your child to engage in face-to-face social activities, sports, or hobbies that don’t involve screens.
Model responsible phone use: Demonstrate healthy phone habits yourself by limiting your own screen time and showing the value of unplugging.
By working together, we can help our students thrive academically and socially. Your partnership in setting limits on cell phone use and encouraging positive digital habits will make a significant difference in your child’s educational journey and overall well-being.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Breckenridge Community Schools and for your commitment to your child’s success.
Sincerely,
Wade Slavik
