Huskie Happenings: Cultivating Leaders in Our School and Community

As we continue our journey together at Breckenridge Community Schools, it is important to recognize that leadership is not confined to titles or positions. Whether you're a staff member, student, or parent, you play an essential role in shaping our school’s culture, supporting one another, and driving success.

Leadership is about influence. As Jon Gordon reminds us in his 10 Thoughts About Leadership, leaders "influence others to become the best version of themselves." Here at Breckenridge Community Schools, I see leadership every day in the actions of our staff, students, and parents. Whether it’s a teacher mentoring a student, a parent volunteering their time, or a student stepping up to help a classmate, leadership is demonstrated each and every day across our community.

Leaders aren’t just focused on their own success; they are invested in making those around them better. This is something we must continue to cultivate in every corner of our school and community. It's about creating an environment where everyone—regardless of role—can step into leadership by helping others grow, fostering teamwork, and embodying humility.

"Great leaders serve," says Gordon, and that service is evident when we focus on supporting one another. True leadership is about putting the needs of others before your own and working toward a common goal. Our students are learning that leadership isn’t about being in charge, but about taking responsibility for making positive contributions. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the athletic field, or in after-school clubs, leadership opportunities for students are abundant.

Parents and community members also play a vital leadership role by supporting our students and our school. When parents engage in school activities, they become partners in leadership. Their involvement not only enhances the educational experience but also strengthens the sense of community that makes Breckenridge special.

As we move forward, I challenge all of us to continue growing as leaders. Leadership is not about having all the answers—it's about asking how we can help, how we can serve, and how we can inspire others. Whether you're a teacher working to bring out the best in your students, a student leading by example, or a parent supporting from the sidelines, know that your leadership matters.

Let's embrace Jon Gordon’s words: "Great leaders don’t succeed because they are great. They succeed because they bring out the greatness in others." Together, we can build a school culture that values leadership, fosters growth, and inspires positive change in our community. Let’s continue to cultivate that leadership in every Huskie heart.

🏆 Our Breckenridge Varsity Volleyball team is on fire! 🔥 Last weekend, they dominated the St. Louis Invitational and brought home the championship trophy! 💪 This weekend, they're competing in the MSAC tournament. Let's go, Huskies!

🎉 Surprise! Mr. Kanine was celebrated during Principal Appreciation Week with a heartwarming hallway walkthrough on Wednesday morning. Known for his friendly high-fives, he made sure to greet every student personally and express his gratitude. Thank you, Mr. Kanine, for your exceptional leadership at Breckenridge Elementary!

💙💛 Mr. Willbanks is receiving a flood of gratitude from our MS/HS Huskies! 🐾 From heartfelt cards to creative videos, they're showering him with appreciation for all his hard work and dedication. Thank you, Mr. Willbanks, for being such an amazing leader and mentor to our students!

Breckenridge Community Schools will promote collaborative partnerships between the school, parents, and community to increase communication and engagement.

🎃 Halloween is almost here, and we’re excited to celebrate with our students! We understand that finding costumes can be tough for some families, so we’re offering a selection of gently used costumes to help everyone participate in the fun. The best part? Students can keep the costumes they choose! 👻

Veterans Day Assembly at Breckenridge Middle/High School

Join us on Monday, November 11th, 2024, at 9:45 a.m. in the HS Gym as we honor our active duty members and veterans. Attending veterans and active duty members are invited to enjoy lunch with our high school students after the assembly.

We also want to feature area veterans and active duty members in our slideshow, including those no longer with us. If you'd like to be included—or honor a veteran you know—please send in your information and photo by Tuesday, November 5th, 2024. (And don’t forget to vote!)

Starting Oct. 22nd – Dec. 19th, we’re offering tutoring sessions every Tuesday & Thursday from 3:05 – 4:05 PM in the MS/HS Library (LMC) for all 6th-12th grade students!

Our dedicated tutors, Ms. Summer Nobis and Mr. Jack Poling, are here to support with: ✅ Missing assignments ✅ Work Completion ✅ Test prep & study skills ✅ Addressing skill gaps with IXL & NWEA data ✅ Monitoring grades in PowerSchool & communication with teachers/parents

🚌 Our BES Huskies learned all about bus safety during Transportation Safety Week! 🚦 Our amazing staff organized hands-on lessons and activities to teach our students important safety rules and expectations. Students learned about topics such as what riders should do when the bus stops at a railroad crossing. Thank you for keeping our little riders safe!
