At Breckenridge Community Schools, we remain deeply committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of our students through Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). SEL is a vital part of our mission to educate, support, and inspire each student to achieve personal excellence and success. This approach not only enhances academic achievement but also builds essential life skills such as self-awareness, empathy, and relationship-building.
At BCS, we are focused on creating meaningful connections between students and caring adults. One specific question that drives our efforts is: Does each student feel that they have at least one adult they feel comfortable reaching out to? This guiding question shapes how we approach our interactions with students, ensuring every child feels seen, heard, and supported.
Our staff is dedicated to building strong relationships with students through:
Check-ins: Teachers take time to greet students and ask how they are feeling.
Classroom SEL Activities: Lessons incorporate discussions about emotions, coping strategies, and teamwork.
Open Door Policies: Staff members encourage students to reach out whenever they need support.
Mentoring Programs: Students are paired with adults or older peers who can provide guidance and encouragement.
Parents play a critical role in fostering SEL at home. By working together, we can help students thrive. Here are some ways parents can have a lasting impact:
Spend Quality Time Together: Engage in activities your child enjoys, like playing a game, reading, or taking a walk. These moments create lasting bonds.
Be Curious About Their Interests: Show genuine interest in what your child is passionate about, whether it’s a hobby, sport, or subject in school.
Model Positive Behavior: Demonstrate empathy, patience, and active listening in your interactions.
Talk About Feelings: Encourage open discussions about emotions and teach your child healthy ways to express them.
Set Routines: Establishing consistent schedules for meals, homework, and bedtime provides stability and security.
Celebrate Their Efforts: Acknowledge your child’s hard work and perseverance, even when outcomes aren’t perfect.
As educators, we will continue to find ways to connect with students and build rapport. We invite parents to partner with us by reinforcing these principles at home. Together, we can create an environment where every student feels valued, supported, and capable of reaching their full potential.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the well-being of our students. If you have any questions or suggestions about SEL practices at BCS, please feel free to reach out.
