The main composition of the symbol at utilized in Transistor Triptych is a combination of the biological symbol for transgender identity and the electrical schematic symbol for a transistor. I used Audacity, a digital audio workspace, to convert the raw image data into sound, add different sound effects to the raw data, and then convert that data back into the image you see now. The sound effects used in this piece were an echo effect (left), phaser effect (center), and reverse effect (right).
Like the metamorphosis of images to sound, I have experienced my own metamorphosis while transitioning as a nonbinary trans woman. I exist in a time and place where I’m able to make my trans-trans-media; trans both in terms of the translation of information and as in transgender identity.
The title, Transistor, is a play on words that is emblematic of my identity in the community. The title refers to electronic components utilized in the data-bending as well as my identity as a trans sister to both my two older brothers and queer community.
