I started painting portraits at the beginning of my medical transition, and would often use my own likeness as a reference for practice. Each portrait revealed the unconscious way I thought about myself and my image. While painting this piece, my vision of myself was constantly shifting based on where I was in my transition, how I was being perceived, and how I felt when I was by myself. This was my first abstract portrait, and I had the most fun experimenting with texture and dimension to mimic the bubbles and rough ripples of the water.
