The GCSE Sport Science course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of how the human body functions and its response to physical activity. Pupils will also learn about the wider impact that sport can have on society, as well as understanding the factors that may affect performance and the ability to lead a healthy active lifestyle. As well as this, pupils will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding to a range of practical activities.
Pupils will study six topic areas over the three year course:
Health, Fitness & Wellbeing
Sport Psychology
Sociocultural Influences
Physical Training
Anatomy & Physiology
Movement Analysis
BET Curriculum Intent:
To develop confident, physically literate young people, and give them the tools to transition from prescriptive sporting activity to individually led activities that can be undertaken once they leave school. It enables students to develop their knowledge of how to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and contribute well to society.
In Year 9, pupils can opt to study GCSE PE as one of their option subjects. Pupils will follow a three year curriculum plan studying the AQA GCSE PE course (8582). The course is assessed via two external summative exams (60%), a practical assessment of three different physical activities (30% - 10% per activity) and one internal written analysis and evaluation of performance (10%). The course is delivered via five 50-55 minute periods spread over a two-week timetable.
