The BTEC Health & Social Care course has been designed to provide a sound, specialist and realistic understanding of how the needs of individuals are met using services and specialist equipment, whilst challenging stereotypes and discrimination. This course develops skills such as empathy, compassion, commitment, tolerance and empowerment which enables our pupils to become educated citizens and contribute to society in a positive way.
Pupils will study three components over the three year course. Components 1 & 2 comprise two learning outcomes, whilst Component 3 comprises four assessment objectives (AO’s):
Component 1: Human Lifespan Development
Learners will explore different aspects of growth and development and the factors that can affect this across the life stages. They will explore the different events that can impact on individuals’ physical, intellectual, emotional and social (PIES) development and how individuals cope with and are supported through changes caused by life events.
Learning Outcome A: Understand human growth and development across life stages and the factors that affect it.
Learning Outcome B: Understand how individuals deal with life events.
Component 2: Health & Social Care Services and Values
Learners will explore health and social care services and how they meet the needs of service users. They will also study the skills, attributes and values required when giving care.
Learning Outcome A: Understand the different types of health and social care services and barriers to
accessing them
Learning Outcome B: Understand the skills, attributes and values required to give care.
Component 3: Health & Wellbeing
Learners will explore the factors that affect health and wellbeing, learning about physiological and lifestyle indicators, and person-centred approaches to make recommendations to improve an individual’s health and wellbeing.
AO1: Knowledge of health and wellbeing
AO2: Understanding of health and wellbeing
AO3: Apply knowledge and understanding of health and wellbeing
AO4: Make connections between aspects of health and wellbeing
In Year 9, pupils can opt to study BTEC Sport as one of their option subjects. Pupils will follow a three year curriculum plan studying the Pearson BTEC Level 2 Tech Award in Health & Social Care. The course is assessed via one external summative exam (33%), and two internal written Pearson-set assignments (total 66%). The course is delivered via five 50-55 minute periods spread over a two-week timetable.
Internal assessment - externally moderated
The summative internal assessments that pupils will sit as part of their BTEC Health & Social Care course are supplied by Pearson every year. Pearson will give a scenario based upon the learning outcomes given above, and pupils must apply the knowledge they have learned in lessons to a written answer. These assignments are summative and will be completed under supervised conditions. Once completed, the assignments are marked and internally moderated by Bohunt BTEC Health & Social Care teachers, and then sent off to be officially moderated by Pearson. In the unlikely event that a pupil does not meet their expected level of performance, they will have one opportunity to improve their assignment before re-submission.
There are two assessment windows per year available for pupils to sit these assignments (October/ February). Pupils will complete the assignments in the following windows:
Component 1 = Year 9
Component 2 = Year 10
External assessment
The summative external assessment is taken in the summer of Year 11.
Bohunt will have a cohort first sit this assessment in the Summer term of 2024 so there is no previous impact data available.
Prior to teaching the 2022 specification, Bohunt taught the OCR Cambridge National Award in Health & Social Care.
