At Bohunt we recognise that physical activity and sport should play an essential part of a pupil’s everyday life. Our goal is to ignite an enthusiasm for physical activity and sport and provide pupils with the necessary skills and experiences for them to be able to continue participating as their educational and life journey continues beyond Bohunt.
Key Stage 3
At Key stage 3, Core PE is delivered in three 50–55-minute periods per week where pupils are taught a broad and balanced curriculum through the following physical activities:
In Year 7, pupils are split into four ability classes following a robust assessment process in the first five weeks of the Autumn term. Each class will then be taught the same curriculum through bespoke programmes of study based on their ability level to promote engagement and ensure all pupils are offered an appropriate level of challenge.
In Year 8, pupils are split into six ability classes based on their attainment in Year 7. Each class will then be taught the same curriculum through bespoke programmes of study based on their ability level to promote engagement and ensure all pupils are offered an appropriate level of challenge.
Key Stage 4
At Key stage 4, Core PE is delivered in two 50-55-minute periods per week where depending on their class, pupils are taught a more varied curriculum through a selection of the following physical activities:
In Year 9, pupils are split into six ability classes based on their attainment in Year 8 and whether they have chosen GCSE PE or BTEC Sport as one of their option subjects. Pupils will then have the option of taking the Level 1 Sports Leaders qualification within their Core PE lessons, and those remaining will be split into either a Performance, Competition or CLIL class.
In Year 10, pupils remain in similar groups to those in Year 9 but with the addition of dispersed CLIL pupils. Pupils have the option to progress their Sports Leadership journey from Year 9 and study the Level 2 Sports Leaders qualification within their Core PE lessons.
In Year 11, pupils are given full autonomy over their PE curriculum and are given the option of following either a Performance, Competition or Participation pathway. Activities taught will depend on the pathway chosen.
The vast majority of pupils meet, or exceed, their expected progress in Physical Education and some leave with a formally recognised Physical Education qualification. Uptake on PE courses at Sixth Form is growing, with numerous students pursuing higher education studies in sport, often making a career out of their chosen sport.
Alongside our Core PE programme, enrichment opportunities such as the Netball tour to Paris (2023), Hockey & Rugby tour to Marbella (2024), Football & Basketball tour to New York & Boston (2025), Ski trip to Austria (annually), Duke of Edinburgh Award, GCSE and A-Level Revision Conferences, Fixtures, Awards evenings all help to celebrate success, engage students and provide unique opportunities for personal development.
Pupils are encouraged to attend co-curricular practices and participate in fixtures against other schools. In Year 7 and 8, every pupil will have the opportunity to represent their house and tutor group in the following inter-house competitions:
Autumn term - Cross country and Dodgeball/ Endball
Spring term - Tough Rugby and Handball
Summer term - Athletics (Sports Day Heats) and Capture the flag
