Bishop O’Connell (7-0) beat Bishop McNamara (6-4) in Volleyball on Sept 25 in the WCAC’s Game of the Week, 3-0. Bishop O’Connell dominated McNamara from the start led by James Madison commit, Macie Murray.
O'Connell started hot, getting out to a four-point lead going up 8-4. McNamara called a timeout to seize the momentum from the Knights. The Knights came out of the timeout going on a quick 3-0 spurt to get them up six. McNamara ended up tying the game at 12-12, but that’s the closest the set got. O’Connell ended the set on a 13-5 run to win it 25-17.
The second set was much like the first, with O’Connell jumping all over the Mustangs. The Mustangs called a timeout down 12-4 in hopes they could start a rally but O'Connell ended up going on an 8-0 run out of the timeout. It seemed like there was zero chance for the Mustangs to get back in this set as O'Connell won the set in a convincing 25-8. The offense shined in this set and throughout the game, as junior Macie Murray and freshman Carolyn Maria both had 11 kills on the day.
The third set started with McNamara finally waking up. They started off hot, gaining an 8-4 lead, their largest lead yet. O’Connell rallied back, making it 8-8 midway through the set. It was back and forth from there as both teams traded points. O’Connell ended up winning the set 25-20 to sweep the Mustangs.
Maria led the team with five aces and Murray right behind with four. Junior Olivia Boggs led the team with blocks in four.
Coach Mehdi was very pleased with how the Knights played, stating “The girls did a great job setting the tone with strong serving and solid defense.”
The Knights will look to continue their success with most of their WCAC schedule ahead.
