Girls Volleyball's Path to the Championship
Lilly Salva ('28) and MJ Selwood ('28)
The girls varsity volleyball team had a remarkable 2024 season, with a record 28 wins. They won their third WCAC final in four years, defeating Academy of the Holy Cross. In the thriller of a match, O’Connell had a major comeback in the fourth set, gaining eleven points. This led to the team’s championship win, emerging victorious in three of the four games with scores ranging from 27-25, 21-25, 25-11, and 27-25. Sophomore Macey Murray used her teamwork and determination to lead the team back to victory, and senior Jocelyn Pye ended it all with the championship spike.
Another achievement the team earned was winning the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) against their rival, Flint Hill, culminating in a three to two match. Coach Medhi exclaimed, “As the season progressed, their hard work paid off; they learned how to compete and win…This team has shown incredible belief in each other and an unwavering commitment to play until the final whistle.”
