Softball- O'Connell's Champions
Kelly Plante ('28)
Coach Uccellinni likes to say, “The standard is the standard” and this season is no exception as Bishop O’Connell softball players aim to bring home the Virginia state title. The varsity team stands as the marker for excellence, going undefeated last year and looking to do the same this season. Players have been practicing since the beginning of the year leading up to tryouts and heading to the field every day since for practice and games. Varsity, as expected, remains undefeated and Junior Varsity stands with only two losses, each team excited to meet and surpass their goals.
O’Connell Softballs has been one of the schools most reputable sports for years bringing home 15 of the past 18 WCAC tournaments and 27 of the past 30 Virginia Independent Schools state championships. With a new head coach, Coach Tony Uccellini, the team hopes to continue the tradition. Practice occurs everyday for both teams and games occur at least twice a week, with each player dealing with school and social life while still managing to put everything out on the field. The program has hit the ground running with 5 new varsity players and an almost entirely new JV team, attempting to build a community of girls who are great players on the field and great people in their community.
Coach Uccellini plans not only to win the championships but to leave each player as a better person than when they started playing. The DJO coaches know that everyone has room to grow and they do everything in their power to push players to achieve their maximum potential–creating a community of girls who are intentional in their actions and there for each other. The program is a fun, team focused sport that makes O’Connell proud and hopes to win big with the playoffs in May. With home runs, sparkling plays, and good sportsmanship, every DJO softball player does their best to make the school proud! If you want to see another dominant season from O’Connell Softball head to the field soon and catch some of the playoff games!
