Scale Drawings
Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Froncak
Mrs. Miller's class: On our last PBL we worked on making an integer timeline of important events in our lives. While making our timelines, we realized the importance of spacing events out on our timeline according to the number of years represented. This led us to our study of scale which was our focus this quarter.
How can we adapt to changes in the structures around us?
We knew that making scale models involved the use of proportions. When we started this unit, we had just completed our unit on proportional relationships.
How to convert measurements from feet/inches to meters/millimeters.
How to scaled room dimensions and objects down to 1% of their actual size.
How to create walls and objects in Tinkercad.
How to find the dimensions of furniture and other objects we wanted to put in our rooms.
How to research our room design and "DREAM BIG".
MGSE7.G.1
Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
Students in Mrs. Miller's class looked at sample room designs and started "dreaming big". Students started by researching what cool things they would want to include in their dream room.
1) Research - finding objects and furniture for room
2) Sketch - drawing a sketch of the room design
3) Converting Measurements & Scaling Down - learned how to find the dimensions of an object, convert to millimeters and then scale to 1%.
4) TinkerCad - learned how to design on a TinkerCad workplane.
5) Design & Create - used Tinkercad to design and create a dream room using converted measurements and scale.
6) Reflection - answered questions reflecting on the process of creating the dream room
Samples of student reflections below;
What did you do your best work on?
The research and planning of my room.
Creating a detailed sketch of my room.
Finding measurements for all of the objects in my room.
Making sure my room dimensions matched the measurements on my worksheet.
What was one thing you learned during this PBL?
I learned how to convert measurements into millimeters then scale it down to one percent.
One thing I learned during this PBL was how to convert measurements. I learned how to convert feet and inches into millimeters.
That designing is really hard if you don't have a creative mind.
During your work time for this PBL, what do you wish you had done differently?
Asked for help when I needed it

Read the rubric
Managed my time better
Miller's math students will continue their Geometry unit and learn about triangles, area & circumference of circles, cross-sections and surface area.
Please leave reflect on our PBL journey and products using the "I like, I wish, I wonder" protocol in the padlet below.
