The thought that inspired us was the current environmental issues of not only Pakistan but the whole world. When our school installed waste segregation, it encouraged us to recycle the waste. Also, the initiative of "billion tree Tsunami" by the government inspired a lot.
Pakistan is facing humongous challenges due to Climate change in terms of Floods, Depleting Glaciers, drought and habitat shrinking. Due to which efforts like use of Bio energy, Electrical cars, Billion tree Tsunami are started by GoP.
Land Pollution is one of the highest contributors towards Climate change, that is the reason I have selected this specific project, Trash to Treasure; Turning Kitchen waste into the compost by traditional and mechanised methods,to help the society to deal with this issue in a positive manner.
In Pakistan, Household garbage is disposed of mostly in Nullah’s, Fresh water streams, Rivers or as landfill. Due to non availability of standardized Recycling industry this waste contributes to increase of land pollution.
Studies revealed that a lot of food waste goes into the dump/ baskets every day. No segregation of waste is carried out and useful waste is ruined.
Our thought behind the project was to;
Create awareness
Waste segregation and Management
Ecoprenuerial vision
Meeting the SDGs to make Pakistan Clean and green.
Our project deals with 4 different areas;
Environmental Protection
Effective waste management
Innovative compost making
Generating revenue
In execution stage, we;
Used Social media (Instagram, Facebook, twitter), School Admin Platform for students and community awareness/ importance about Kitchen Garbage Compost.
Collected old buckets/ converted them into the compost bins.
Distributed compost bins among school children and nearby communities.
Once the compost was ready, it was used in our kitchen garden and was sold to the nearby nursery.
Means to improve, Compost making is a long process. So, with the initial money collected after selling the compost, we designed a prototype that could make compost in a week..
The prototype is a success story, we hope we’ll make a proper composting machine in future.
We started with one bin and now we have almost 40-50 bins in the community where composting is done successfully.
