We were studying a unit “Mapping it out” under the global context, orientation in space and time. So we made an effort to explore different types of maps, coordinates and Google Earth app. By using Google Earth, we could see the geographical features of different locations. Finally, we got a chance to go through the work of Paul Salopek i.e. “Out of Eden Walk”, he is a photo journalist who recorded a 21,000 miles odyssey through creating milestones. Moreover, he eloquently made maps of the places he had travelled. Therefore, we decided to draw an inspiration from him and came up with the idea of creating our milestone to give a message to the world, “Slow down and observe”.
We did an in-depth research to reach the culmination. We followed these major steps:
1. Understanding maps, mapping technologies, such as Google Earth & GPS
2. A detailed study of different articles related to strategic importance of maps
3. A thorough analysis of Paul Salopek’s 'out of Eden walk'
4. Jotting down our own ideas (Various tentative locations)
5. Finalizing our plan
6. Recording our own milestones
7. Presentation of our milestone
8. Creating the maps of our own
It will slow the people down and make them observe their surroundings. Also, they will know what's happening around them. Through these milestones we wanted the world to see our city through our lens. Our milestones have given people a glance into the magnificent history of Multan and the beautiful suburbs/villages that this place is rich in. We wish that someday through our work, we can raise a voice for the preservation of our historical monuments and work towards the progress of our rural belt.
After culminating this project, we as a class have started to observe the world around us in a far systematic manner. We have incorporated our observation skills in a number of other projects and it is one of the major highlights of the many takeaways from this project. Moreover, Paul Salopek's slow journalism made us understand how important it is to preserve, rediscover and revisit our the footsteps of our ancestors. In short, we can say slowing down helps think and preserve the insights.
