RIDES TO SCHOOL
Here is some advice for students who will not have a car of their own and need to ask for rides.
Giving rides
Offering Rides
If you told someone you will give them a ride, please communicate if something changes. Rides can be hard to find at the last minute, and that person is counting on you.
This is a learning culture. It’s okay to say no if you can’t give a ride.
Learn how to communicate your personal boundaries. Nobody can guess that you are frustrated if you don't talk about it.
Asking for gas in advance is not wrong. As mentioned before, nobody can guess your needs.
If you can, please bless the ones who are struggling financially, but also the ones who need help.
If someone lost track of time because they had an encounter with the Lord, please have grace and try to help them. If you can't wait, don't leave without communicating with that student.
Common Sense:
Always avoid riding alone with someone of the other sex. This is an honorable culture, and we want to protect all of you!
Do not pick up hitchhikers. It's dangerous!
Asking for rides
Asking for Rides
Always ask if you can help with gas. It’s normal to give $1 or $2 when someone drives you around, for school groceries or parties. If they ask for more than $3 for a short distance, that is too much.
Honor their time. Be ready at your door when they arrive.
Honor their time. If someone takes you to the grocery shop, please don’t expect them to wait for you for 1 or 2 hours! Try to be fast and focused. Or communicate your need to spend more time shopping when you ask for the ride.
If you are going every day to school with a friend, you can discuss monthly support for the driver (after all, the car uses more than just gas)—around $20 per month, for example).
Don't ever expect your roommate or housemate to be waiting for you to go back home when you go to parties, school or meetings. Always communicate (before) to ask if they can wait for you.
Rides are hard to find at the last minute, and it’s honoring to ask in advance.
If you lost track of time because you had an encounter with the Lord, please understand that your driver may have responsibilities and not be able to wait for you.
Redding has a public bus service. It’s called RABA (Redding Area Bus Authority). But it is limited. It’s not like in a big city or in some other countries.
You can find out on this website if you live near a bus stop that would be convenient for you:
