Please pray as you search for a place to stay.
I am happy to answer questions if you want to email me at bssm.international@bethel.com.
I have a limited ability to help you look and to find volunteers to help you look, but if you ask for help, make sure to clearly say what you are looking for:
Do you want your own apartment or home?
Do you want a room in an apartment or home?
Are you willing to share a room with another person?
Are you willing to share a home with several other students?
Will you have a car?
What is the highest amount of money you able to spend for housing (including utilities)?
Please read below for more information:
1. If you sign a lease for a room, house or apartment, you are legally bound to stay there until the end of the lease, unless the terms allow you to give a month’s notice or something before moving out. Please make sure you know what you are committing to.
2. When you rent, there are things the landlord requires. Find out what they are and if you are comfortable with their rules. You need to do what they ask if you plan to live there, so be sure you know what they expect from you, and you know what you can expect from them.
3. If you are not sure if a place is in a safe area, or if the rent is reasonable, or if the terms are legal, you may email bssm.international@bethel.com. We may not know the answer, and our opinion is not professional, but we will try to help you find out. In the end, you are responsible for where you decide to stay.
4. It is best to have things in writing.
1. A landlord cannot come into your house without letting you know he/she is coming. Usually, they should tell you a day in advance.
2. They are required to fix things, but if you break something or do not take care of something, they may require you to fix it or pay for it.
3. Don’t give anyone 8 months’ rent all at once. You may be asked to pay a deposit of one- or two-months’ rent, but do not give all your money to anyone at one time. You should only have to pay one month’s rent at a time.
