Thanksgiving Day is a uniquely North American holiday. (Canadians observe it the second Monday in October, and often our Canadian students hold their own celebration together.) Celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November, it is a time to gather with friends and family to give thanks to the Lord and to enjoy a holiday feast. Traditional foods include turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Lots of variations and other dishes can also be served. Often families begin the day by watching on TV the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, held in New York City and which marked its 100th anniversary in 2024. Many end the day watching American football games. Most Americans do not have to work that day or the day after, which is called Black Friday. It’s the first official day of the Christmas shopping season and many stores hold huge sales on that day.
For You (Student)
Each year, several Bethel members sign up to host an international student or two (sometimes 20!) at their home for Thanksgiving dinner.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience a cherished holiday with an American individual or family.
*Look for an email in October asking you to sign up if you would like to receive an invitation!
