Peer Listening I
Hope Squad
Grades 10-11-12

Peer Listening trains students to use active listening as a tool in guiding other students through a problem. They receive intensive training in effective communication skills, crisis intervention, and referral. Peer listeners also raise awareness about issues relevant to adolescents. As Hope Squad members, Peer Listeners are trained in suicide prevention and work to improve mental health education while reducing the stigma. They inform staff, students, and the community of these issues and work to build a positive school culture.

Peer Listening II Hope Squad
Grades 11-12
Year / 1 credit
Peer Listening II students use the active listening, communication, problem-solving, and crisis intervention skills learned in Peer Listening I to help their peers. They serve as mentors for freshman students, ambassadors for new students, and support for any student who would like to talk to a Peer Listener. Peer listeners in PL II continue to raise awareness about issues relevant to adolescents and work to enhance school culture as a community of support for students. As Hope Squad members, they provide connection and belongingness to their peers in distress.

Student Council
Grades 9-10-11-12
Semester / No credit
Student Council serves as a voice for the student body and a service organization for the school. Members participate in a wide variety of activities, including leadership training workshops, advisory councils, and special projects. Student Council strives to be a positive influence in improving Beavercreek High School and its environment. The class meets one period each day, is led by five elected officers, and has a limited number of students. Selection to Student Council is based on school citizenship and a student’s potential to contribute to the student body. Membership is by selection from those who register; it is not an elected office for the regular members. Students may register for the fall or spring semester.

Media Center/Information Center

Aides perform tasks such as typing, filing, errands, and assisting students and staff find
and check out materials. Computer lab aides help students and staff utilize software. The
aides perform a valuable service to the school and use the experience to obtain jobs at the local public library and cinemas.

Office Aide
Grades 10-11-12
Semester / No credit
Office aides run errands and assist office staff.

Peer Helper
Grades 10-11-12
Semester / No credit
Peer Helpers serve many functions in special education classrooms. Peer Helpers assist teachers with individual, small, and large group activities, and provide positive role modeling for students with disabilities. Two options are available: academic setting or adaptive physical education.
