BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES PATHWAY
PROJECT LEAD THE WAY
In partnership with the Greene County Career Center, a PLTW program in Biomedical Sciences is offered. Working with the same equipment and tools used by lab professionals, PLTW Biomedical Science students are empowered to explore and find solutions to some of today’s most pressing medical challenges. Through scaffolded activities that connect learning to life, students step into the roles of biomedical science professionals and investigate topics including human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and public health. Students work together in teams to find unique solutions, and in the process, learn in-demand, transferable skills like critical thinking and communication. Any high school student wishing to explore a career in the medical field and/or biomedical engineering is encouraged to sample these classes. Scholarship with Miami Valley Tech Prep Consortium. The scholarship is a $3000 scholarship to Sinclair Community College for students who complete two or more courses in the pathway with a 2.25 GPA or higher. Details can be found here: https://www.mvtechprep.org/resources/scholarship-awards/
Course Descriptions
Principles of Biomedical Science (PBS)
Grades 9-10
Year / 1 credit
Principles of Biomedical Science serves to provide foundational knowledge and skills in fields such as biology, anatomy and physiology, genetics, microbiology, and epidemiology, as well as engage students in how they can apply this content to real-world situations, cases, and problems such as solving a medical mystery case, diagnosing and treating a patient, or responding to a medical outbreak. This updated program modernizes content to be interactive using 3D animations, virtual and augmented reality, simulated electronic patient records, and more. The emphasis will be on how concepts in science, technology, math, and engineering apply in tandem to help understand and solve health care problems.
Fee - No
In-state Career Tech Assurance Guide (CTAG) college credit may be available with passage of WEBXAM.
Human Body Systems (HBS)
Grades 10-11-12
Year / 1 credit
This class is the second course in the PLTW Biomedical STEM Program. In the Human Body Systems (HBS) course, students examine the interactions of body systems as they explore identity, communication, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis. Students design experiments, investigate the structures and functions of the human body, and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through interesting real world cases, and often play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries.
* Course offered at 4.5 weight
* Course counts as Advanced Science credit
Fee - No
In-state Career Tech Assurance Guide (CTAG) college credit may be available with passage of WEBXAM.
Medical Interventions (MI)
Grades 10-12
Year / 1 credit
Students follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease. Students explore how to detect and fight infection; screen and evaluate the code in human DNA; evaluate cancer treatment options; and prevail when the organs of the body begin to fail. Through real-world cases, students are exposed to a range of interventions related to immunology, surgery, genetics, pharmacology, medical devices, and diagnostics. Lifestyle choices and preventative measures are emphasized throughout the course as well as the important role that scientific thinking and engineering design play in the development of interventions of the future.

HEALTHCARE TECHNICIAN PATHWAY
The newly expanded program at Beavercreek High School, in partnership with the Greene County Career Center, offers students a distinctive pathway to explore careers as healthcare technicians. This program provides students with the chance to earn industry-recognized credentials, equipping them for direct entry into the workforce while benefiting from guided, structured work-based learning experiences.
Participants can earn certifications in CPR & First Aid, Bleeding Control Basics, Phlebotomy Technician, and Pharmacy Technician—credentials recognized by the state to support alternative graduation pathways. The program begins with an introductory semester-long course, followed by advanced courses offered in a two-period block format, designed to maximize hands-on learning opportunities.
The program culminates in a capstone course, where students earn high school credits through immersive work-based learning, providing a strong foundation for future success in the healthcare field.
Course Descriptions
Health Science & Technology
Grades 9-10
Semester / ½ credit
This first course in the career field provides students an overview of the opportunities available in the healthcare industry. Students will learn fundamental skills in effective and safe patient care that can be applied across a person’s lifespan. They will also be introduced to exercise science and sports medicine, the field of biomedical research, and the importance of managing health information.
Fee - No
In-state Career Tech Assurance Guide (CTAG) college credit may be available with passage of WEBXAM.
Principles of Allied Health
Grades 11-12
Year / 1 credit
In this first course students will apply knowledge and clinical skills necessary to assess, plan, provide, and evaluate care to patients in varied healthcare settings. Students will apply first aid principles and techniques needed for response to choking, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and other life-threatening emergencies. Emphasis will be placed on regulatory compliance, patient safety, pathophysiology, and medical interventions. Additionally, this course introduces psychomotor skills needed to assist individuals in meeting basic human needs.
