AFJROTC
AFJROTC
AIR FORCE JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps)
There is no obligation or commitment to the military for participating in the program. AFJROTC is a character development program designed to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship, promote community service, instill personal responsibility, and self-discipline. The program achieves this through classroom education in aerospace fundamentals and hands-on learning opportunities in a number of fun and challenging extra-curricular activities. The course is made up of three separate, but closely related areas:
- Aerospace Science courses focus on the History of Aviation, Science of Flight, Space Exploration, Survival Skills, Management of the Corps, and Cultural Awareness. The courses are designed to introduce students to the development of flight, aerospace environment including the principles of navigation, exploration of space, and major geographical regions of the world. To reinforce what is taught in the classroom, students participate in many outside activities such as field trips to military bases, aerospace facilities and industries, museums, civilian airports, and other areas related to aerospace education.
- Leadership Education courses focus on character development. Students will learn effective communication skills, to listen and think critically, how to build personal awareness, key elements of building and encouraging effective teams, and key behaviors for becoming a credible and competent leader. Students will also learn about military drill and ceremony, life skills after high school, specific career options, how to create a personal budget and financial plan, how to write a resume, how to interview for a job, and how to apply for college.
- Wellness (physical fitness) is an official and integral part of the Air Force Junior ROTC program. The objective of the Wellness (fitness) component is to motivate cadets to lead healthy, active lifestyles beyond program requirements and into their adult lives. NOTE: After two years of satisfactory completion of AFJROTC, students are eligible to receive the Physical Education Waiver authorized by the Ohio Department of Education.
- Co-Curricular Activities: AFJROTC offers several clubs and teams that further enhance the classroom experience such as radio-controlled aircraft, model rocketry, drill team, orienteering, academic groups, and summer leadership schools. Additionally, community service projects are a major part of the AFJROTC experience and help instill a sense of civic pride and citizenship.
Prerequisites: All cadets enrolled in this program are REQUIRED to wear the Air Force JROTC service uniform and the issued fitness uniform at least one day each week. Uniform wear requires appropriate haircuts/shave for males and appropriate hairstyles for females. Students must also be willing to actively participate in one physical training (workout) session per week.
