We are using the Pearson EnVisions Math 2.0 curriculum for 1st grade. However, I am a teacher who lives by the standards and therefore most often differentiates with my own materials that incorporate advanced/extended standards. The single most important thing you can do with your child is have them consistently build their math facts. First meet the Kindergarten standard of sums to 5 and subtraction from 5. Next, move up to sums to 7 and subtraction from 7. Then move up to sums to 10, and subtraction from 10. After those are complete work on single digit “doubles”. Last will be adding 10, then 9 (plus 10-1) and adding 11 (plus 10-1). I am a big advocate for the Khan Academy Math program (online). It is a FREE online resource. Sign up and focus on the K-2 math program.
Khan Academy
Another terrific math resource is Khan Academy. I encourage all parents to open an account for their child. There is NO COST and they do not solicit or receive funds for the resource they provide. It is a great way to get supplemental support ( Math & Reading)) or address remediation for students who may find themselves below grade level. A GREAT resource. Khan Academy
Sunshine Math
Sunshine Math are a series of "grade level" worksheets that will drive the thinking of your student. The worksheets are not designed to be skill based, but require a student to think to arrive at a logical solution. There is most often more than one way to solve a problem. There are a good 50+ pages per grade level. This is a good resource to have your child do on their own and then to follow up and see how they did. It is great differentiated work for high achieving students who often need additional work. Click the Sunshine Math link below to find out more.
Math Facts
Math facts are critical to success in any early math programs. Our class is no different. This will probably be the only homework your child will have in Math this year. Click here HERE to find out more about MATH FACTS
"Rocket Math" (math fact builder) Rocket Math
Rocket Math is a tablet/I-Pad math facts program designed to help students succeed with mastery of their math facts. Students access Rocket Math through the Clever Portal.
All STUDENTS CAN LEARN MATH FACTS TO AUTOMATICITY (instantly without hesitation).
When Rocket Math is taught with fidelity students learn successfully one operation of facts to automaticity per semester.
Students who have mastered math facts show marked improvement in higher order math algorithms including fractions, word problems, long division, multi-digit multiplication and a host of other areas.
Even pre-algebra and algebra students find coursework much easier when they successfully complete Rocket Math to learn math facts to automaticity.
