Independent reading is an essential requirement for a child to develop strong reading skills. Like anything else in life, failing to practice something means you probably won't be very good at it. Conversely, the more you practice something, the higher the likelihood you will be successful. That is where Independent Reading takes it's position as one of the most important investments of time for a child's academic future. It really does not matter what they read, provided it is on or slightly above their reading level. Books, online articles, magazines, comics, kids' websites, are all examples of text your child may find interesting. With independent reading, it's all about "engagement" and that means it's pretty much the child's interest that should drive the "what" they read, however, YOU drive the "when" they read, and now know the "why". Make it happen.
