High frequency words are quite simply those words which occur most frequently in written material, for example, "and", "the", "as" and "it". They are often words that have little meaning on their own, but they do contribute a great deal to the meaning of a sentence.
High-frequency words are the most commonly occurring words in print. Fry's Instant Words and Dolch Words are examples of high frequency words (the, of, and, to, in, etc). Sight words are words that are recognized "at first sight". Any word can become a sight word once a student can read it instantly.
The importance of sight word study /recognition. A child's ability to decode words is a very important part of becoming a fluent reader. Being able to read high frequency/sight words without hesitation will help your child better understand what is being read.
HOW TO LEARN SITE WORDS
You can write each word on an index card or print out the index cards using our file below. Show your student the index card with the site word on it. They should be able to tell you the word in 1-2 seconds. If they can't, tell them the word and have them repeat it back to you three times. Then move to the next word. As a guideline don't use more than 10 NEW words in the CURRENT study deck. Keep adding to the students overall site word deck. Meaning don't drop prior words out of the deck that were from a prior week, just keep them separate. However, it is important that you keep the most current study words separate from the overall deck because they will need repeat practice with them. Keep adding to the overall deck until you get upwards of 40-50 words and then you can drop the oldest cards from the deck (which they will have mastery of hopefully)
