At Barlby Bridge, our intent is to equip all children with the knowledge and understanding to communicate effectively through both spoken and written language. We aim to nurture confident, articulate individuals who can influence the world around them as they mature. Informed by our children, staff and government publications, alongside the best available evidence, our curriculum is designed to:
Develop pupils’ spoken language as a foundation for writing, recognising that oral composition supports written fluency.
Ensure secure acquisition of transcription skills (handwriting and spelling) from Reception, enabling automaticity and freeing cognitive load for composition.
Build pupils’ understanding of sentence construction, grammar, and punctuation as tools for meaning-making.
Foster a love of writing, encouraging pupils to take pleasure in language and to become lifelong learners.
Provide inclusive, challenging, and meaningful learning experiences that reflect pupils’ needs and interests. We use a ‘teach through text’ approach and we work tirelessly to create a bank of the best, quality texts, that enrich and engage our pupils.
Above all else, we want children to find a ‘love of language’ and have opportunities to celebrate their work, through publishing and sharing of their compositions.
Planning and teaching are rooted in age-related expectations and meaningful contexts, with opportunities to build on prior learning and apply new skills (see the Long-Term plan for more information). All pupils are supported to achieve their full potential through adaptive teaching and targeted support, whilst remembering our core value of aspiration and achievement in all we do.
