PE & Sport Premium
The government has provided funding of £150 million per annum since 2013/14 to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and goes directly to schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all children. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.
At Barlby Bridge, we are passionate about keeping fit, healthy competitive play and how to become a good sportsperson. In addition to all children participating in two hours PE lessons per week, we utilise our sports funding in a variety of ways. Take a look at our most recent 2022 Sport Premium Statement as well as the drop downs below.
Play Leaders
At BBS, we encourage children to develop as individuals. One of the ways we try to encourage this is a ‘Play Leading Scheme’. The scheme promotes children’s well-being, abilities, social skills and teamwork. It also encourages the older children to organise games for the younger children, it promotes the children’s organisation, communication and responsibility skills and most importantly they all have fun! We meet on a regular basis to discuss ideas for new games, play equipment and put forward any ideas or suggestions other children may have to improve playtimes and increase physical activity in school.
Our play leaders volunteer their time to support the younger pupils at play times to establish a happy, active playtime for all children. As well as delivering traditional playground games, the children have lots of play equipment to enjoy, ranging from hula-hoops, skipping ropes, basketballs, netballs, bowling, footballs, Yoyos, and bats and balls with more equipment on the way!
Another of the aims of the scheme is that it will increase the amount of physical activity undertaken during playtime/lunchtime and reduce the amount of behaviour issues on the playground. It is hoped there will be a whole school impact in terms of children’s behaviour both at lunchtime and in afternoon lessons.
Daily Mile
Barlby Bridge is a Daily Mile School and we enjoy taking part in this on an afternoon when we can. The children learn about, and take part in the daily mile in Reception so that it can be utilised throughout their time at BBS. The Daily Mile is a social physical activity, with children running or jogging – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends. Children can occasionally walk to catch their breath, if necessary, but should aim to run or jog for the full 15 minutes. We want every child to have the opportunity to do The Daily Mile at primary school, and are now working to build The Daily Mile’s community with schools, local councils, sports bodies and other supporters in the UK and beyond.
What the Daily Mile website says about the initiative:
"The aim of The Daily Mile is to improve the physical, social, emotional and mental health andwellbeing of our children – regardless of age, ability or personal circumstances.
The Universities of Stirling, Edinburgh and Highlands & Islands found that 15 minutes of self-paced exercise, such as The Daily Mile, is beneficial for pupils’ cognition and wellbeing."

Active Minutes
Let’s get active!
The UK Chief Medical Officers have now recommended that each child should be active for 60 minutes per day.
The recommendation is that schools provide 30 minutes of being active on top of the current provision: 2 hours of P.E a week. The other 30 minutes should be completed outside of school – this can be going to a sports specific club or even just kicking a ball in the garden, as long as the child is active!
Children take part in the Daily Mile and an Active Assembly every Tuesday, along with a variety of other 15-minute active learning lessons and brain breaks. Go Noodle, JumpStart Jonny and SuperMovers are just some of the sites we use to keep our bodies moving.
Swimming
At Barlby Bridge we offer weekly swimming lessons across the Summer term in Year 5 & 6. This takes place at the Selby Leisure Centre, which is a fifteen-minute walk from school. Click here to find out more about this facility.
Clubs
We offer a great many morning and after school sports clubs. We use the our PE funding so that the children can join free of charge and receive expert coaching from sports specialists. The type of club changes each term, but we have run multi-skills, dance, Healthy Lifestyles, football, and netball, to name a few.
Breaks & Lunchtimes
At break and lunchtimes, our playgrounds are full of opportunities for pupils to participate in active games.
We have a collection of skipping ropes, stilts and ball games for pupils of all ages. Each class has their own play basket, full of equipment suitable for their age group.
Outside, we have Netball and Football nets available to use most lunchtimes, as well as our permanent fixtures – the climbing wall and triple-hoop game. Look down to find plenty of playground markings, encouraging you to hop, skip and jump your way around the playground. Our Trim Trail will help enhance all components of fitness, including gross and fine motor skills.
