The Government has provided additional funding for primary school sport, known as the Primary PE and Sport Premium, since 2013/14. This funding is jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport and is allocated directly to primary schools to improve the quality of PE and sport for all children.
The funding must be spent on sport and PE provision in schools and is designed to make sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education and opportunities for physical activity. At Barlby Bridge School, we are passionate about:
Keeping children fit and healthy
Encouraging enjoyable, competitive play
Teaching pupils how to become fair, respectful and resilient sportspeople
All children take part in at least two hours of PE lessons per week, and we use our Sports Premium funding in a variety of ways to enhance this, including additional activities, resources and sporting opportunities.
You can find out more about how we use our funding by viewing our most recent 2022 Sports Premium Statement and exploring the information in the drop-down sections below.
At BBS, we encourage children to develop as individuals. One of the ways we try to encourage this is a ‘Play Leading Scheme’. The scheme promotes children’s well-being, abilities, social skills and teamwork. It also encourages the older children to organise games for the younger children, it promotes the children’s organisation, communication and responsibility skills and most importantly they all have fun! We meet on a regular basis to discuss ideas for new games, play equipment and put forward any ideas or suggestions other children may have to improve playtimes and increase physical activity in school.
Our play leaders volunteer their time to support the younger pupils at play times to establish a happy, active playtime for all children. As well as delivering traditional playground games, the children have lots of play equipment to enjoy, ranging from hula-hoops, skipping ropes, basketballs, netballs, bowling, footballs, Yoyos, and bats and balls with more equipment on the way!
Barlby Bridge is a Daily Mile School and we enjoy taking part in this on an afternoon when we can. The children learn about, and take part in the daily mile in Reception so that it can be utilised throughout their time at BBS. The Daily Mile is a social physical activity, with children running or jogging – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends. Children can occasionally walk to catch their breath, if necessary, but should aim to run or jog for the full 15 minutes. We want every child to have the opportunity to do The Daily Mile at primary school, and are now working to build The Daily Mile’s community with schools, local councils, sports bodies and other supporters in the UK and beyond.
What the Daily Mile website says about the initiative:
"The aim of The Daily Mile is to improve the physical, social, emotional and mental health andwellbeing of our children – regardless of age, ability or personal circumstances.
The Universities of Stirling, Edinburgh and Highlands & Islands found that 15 minutes of self-paced exercise, such as The Daily Mile, is beneficial for pupils’ cognition and wellbeing."
