Intent Statement

At Barlby Bridge Primary, our History curriculum is designed to ignite critical thinking, foster empathy, and develop a deep understanding of the past. Through a carefully sequenced and evidence-led approach, we aim to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to explore significant events, people, and periods with critical thinking and compassion.

Our curriculum is based around the principles of the National Curriculum and enriched by the CUSP History framework. It ensures that pupils:

• Develop a coherent and connected understanding of chronology, cause and consequence, and change over time.

• Build a broad and inclusive mental timeline that reflects diverse cultures, communities, and experiences.

• Use historical vocabulary with confidence and precision.

• Make meaningful connections between past and present, fostering a sense of belonging to both local and global communities.

Our History curriculum reflects our school values, ensuring that pupils grow not only in knowledge but in character as life-long learners in the modern world, with empathy to everything that came before them.
