Morning Snack -
Snack is to be eaten before or after morning recess with an advisor. This time should be seen as an opportunity for the advisor to connect with their students and for students to connect with each other. Snack is independent from recess and is an important time of day for students to have time to refuel after their morning learning. Snack should be supervised at all times. Students should be sitting and eating. All trash should get picked up and thrown away.
The Aveson Food Services program will provide snack bags for every student at no cost. Tk - 2 IAs will deliver snack bags to classrooms before morning snack time. Responsible students may also have this “job” and pick up snacks in the kitchen each morning. 3-5 snack bags will be in the auditorium, kitchen area, ready for snacktime in the cafe area. Advisors will need to check off students on the list as they grab snacks. Snack bags need to go back to the kitchen once the snack has been passed out.
Tk - 2 snack locations can be: in the back of classrooms, front of classrooms breezeways or the upper blacktop tables with advisor supervision.
3-5 snack location will be in the cafe area on the lower blacktop with advisor supervision.
Morning Recess -
Recess is for play only, no eating. Recess will be located on the Upper and Lower Blacktop playgrounds.
Tk - 2 students play on the upper blacktop
ALL 3-5 students play on the lower blacktop
**The field can be used for play depending on supervision coverage.**
Recess equipment will be located in the closet on the upper blacktop and in the shed on the lower blacktop. The IAs will pass out and collect all equipment. The Assistant Site Director and Lead IA are responsible for ordering and maintaining recess equipment.
Lunch -
At lunchtime, students eat first then play. Lunch will be located on the Upper and Lower Blacktop playgrounds.
Tk/K students will eat lunch and play on the upper blacktop
1st - 5th grade students will eat lunch at the cafe tables and play on the lower blacktop
Lunch will be plated for easy grab and go in addition to an help-yourself salad bar. All students are invited to eat school lunch at no cost. Students will stand in line to grab their food, sit and eat and then play. IAs will need to check off students on the list as they grab their lunch.
Students may always bring food from home to eat for snack and/or lunch. They may eat a combination of home and school food. ASL is a nut-sensitive school, but not a nut-free school. We highly encourage families to send other butters to school besides nut butters, but we do not enforce a nut-free policy.
One of our objectives at Aveson is to encourage and educate our students about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle including nutritious eating, as well as helping to cultivate a dining experience rather than contributing to the “eat-and-run” culture to which we have unfortunately become so accustomed. In support of our vision of a school reflecting nutritious and healthy eating and living, as a first step we ask that families consider choosing healthful food options when packing their child’s lunch and avoid such food items as soda and candy.
Other Details:
See the ASL SCHEDULES spreadsheet for all grade level times and locations for snack, recess and lunch.
A supervision document will be shared soon.
See the Playground and Structure Guidelines for the upper and lower blacktops document for what rules to teach and reinforce with students.
The Connections Room! This space is adjacent to the art classroom and auditorium. This space will be used for student support needs on an as needed basis - for example, if a student needs a cool-down space, or a conflict resolution meeting needs to take place between several students, or a student needs a quieter, alternative space to work. In addition, Chill Play will run out of the Connections Room this year. Chill Play is a fun, small group play experience that is an alternative to the larger playground setting. Chill Play takes place during lunch times and is utilized by students via a sign-up process that will be communicated at the start of the school year. The Connections Room and Chill Play will be run by our student support Lead IA, Ryan McClintock. If a staff member thinks they have a student who could benefit from the Connections Room, they should call the front office or radio for Ryan McClintock before sending the student.
