Sarah Mazza

This work is about freedom — the following of creative instinct, playfulness, and referring to creative whim for guidance. There is an exuberance in my work, a sense of excitement and joy. I can turn a piece around and around in my hands until it feels complete. I paint nature as a non-representative feeling or aura, and have developed a personal language of mark making. My art relates to process art in the way that it holds on to and shows the way it was decorated within the ceramic surface itself. Spontaneity feels like electricity as it guides me in my mark making process while taking into account elements like color, contrast, balance, and flow within the ceramic surface. Layering these elements adds a sense of ephemerality and wonder about how and in what order these marks were made. These works are about the state of artistic flow that I undergo when given an undecorated ceramic form. Having the expanse of emptiness to create upon the bare ceramic form is exciting and inspiring. The three dimensionality of the objects I create allow the surface to be infinite and playful. It serves as a three-dimensional canvas. It is a constant discovery of the surface moving from one mark to the next.
