My artwork accurately depicts images and processes in the field of science, helping to create a common ground so that both scientists and everyday people can understand the information presented. I have always prided myself in creating artwork that blends information with differing degrees of complexity in a manner that is approachable by everyone. I love exploring line, tone, and color in a variety of media, both traditional and digital. I focus on the nature and the biological side of scientific illustration with the main subjects being plants, animals, and insects. In this particular project, I focused on how vital traditional art processes are a basis for my digital work. Traditional sketches are the foundation of all of my illustrations. I utilize scans of these sketches as an under-painting; then I build up and block in large bodies of color. The addition of detail is the next step. There is a push and pull to get the form correct and accurate while at the same time create an interesting and engaging final image. My artistic goal is to encourage not only fellow artists to create, but also to foster a curiosity about the world of science.
