Note: If you want a matching lanyard, make sure you choose a piece of fabric that you can also get a 3x36 inch strip out of.
These directions are adapted from She Can Sew.
Step 1: Cut the Fabric
The paper pattern I've provided is half of the pattern. If you cut on the fold, you'll get a full piece with half the cutting.
Fold the fabric in half and use your fabric pen to draw the shape of the wallet with the flat edge of the pattern against the fold.
The use your scissors to cut along the pen mark. Don't cut along the fold. Then use scissors to cut out your fabric. Repeat both both peices.
You also need a 2x2.5 inch piece for the loop.
Step 2: Cut the interfacing
Option 2: I have already precut a piece of interfacing for everyone. Fold it in half and repeat the process above cutting out two pieces of interfacing. Cut out with scissors.
Cut a 2x2.5 inch piece from the scrap for your loop.
Step 3: Iron on the interfacing
Iron the interfacing onto the back of your fabric.
Step 4: Make the loop
After applying the interfacing, fold the rectangle in half and iron to make a crease. Then fold the outside edges to the fold. Iron. Fold again. Sew the edge.
Alterate Option: Fold in the raw edges and add your loop in steps 11-12.
Step 5: Assemble and Pin
Put the right sides together. Pin or clip. Mark a four inch opening (about the width of the bump on top). This will be your opening to turn your wallet right side out.
Put the loop between the two pieces with the raw edges flat against the right side of the top bump (that bump will be the flap). See orange clip in photos.
Step 6: Sew
Starting at one of side of the 4 inch opening, sew all the way around the wallet. Go slow around the curves to keep the 1/4 inch seam allowance. Stop when you get to the other side of the openng you marked.
Backstitch when you start and stop and over the loop.
Step 7: Clip corners and curves.
Clip the corners at the bottom edge. This is really important or your sewing machine will struggle to sew over those corners.
Then clip the inside corner (see photo). Then cut small slits in the top curves.
Step 8: Turn right side out
Turn right side out and push out corners with a chopstick.
Step 9: Press
Press with a hot iron. Make sure you get the inside edges of your opening pressed inside the wallet.
Step 10: Topstitch
Topstitch around the entire wallet. Make sure you sew the opening closed.
Step 11: Fold
With the lining facing up, fold the right flap over the the main body of the wallet. Then fold the left side over. Make sure the edges are lined up and clip on the bottom and side.
Step 12: Topstitch again
Starting at the top of the side (the curved edge) sew down to the bottom, pivot, and then sew along the bottom. You are sewing through a lot of layers, so go slow.
Step 13: Add snaps
Make a mark 3/4 inch from the edge of the flap. Use the snap tool to add a snap.
Close the flap and use the snap to help you mark where the second flap should go. This should only go through the outer pocket.
Step 14: Add a split ring
Add a split ring so it can be used with your lanyard.
