Step 1:
Using tailor’s chalk/fabric pen and a ruler draw a diagonal line from corner to corner. Then draw a line in the center from top to bottom and from side to side. The lines should intersect in the middle.
Then lay that piece of fabric on top of the batting.
Use pins to secure the fabric to the batting, so the batting will not move while you're sewing. See photo
*The batting stretches very easily, so handle gently.
Step 2:
Sew along each of the four lines to attach the fabric to the batting. Make sure the thread is 100% cotton.
Step 3:
Fold the fabric/batting piece in half. Then with a ruler measure the folded corner. It will be one inch across the top and two inches down the side (see photo). Make sure you measure! Cut with a rotary cutter or mark with the tailor’s chalk and cut with scissors.
*These are called darts.
Step 4:
Fold the other way and do the same thing.
Step 5:
Repeat step 4-5 with the second fabric piece.
Step 6:
Fold in half with the batting side out. Pin through all layers to secure. Using a ¼ seam allowance, sew along all four cut corners. Do the top and bottom; refold and then do the sides. This will create the bowl shape.
Do the same thing to the other piece of fabric.
Step 7:
Put the lining fabric inside the fabric with the batting with the good sides facing. Pin in place. Make sure the corners and edges are aligned.
Step 8:
Starting at one dart, sew all the way around until you get to the last corner. Go slow and make sure the fabric stays lined up! Instead of turning at the last corner, sew off the edge.
Clip your corners (except the one you didn’t sew)
Step 9:
Turn right side out. Use the chopsticks to push out the corners.
Step 10:
Use an iron to make sure the edges are straight and lay flat, especially at the edge you still need to sew.
Step 11:
Fold the handle loop piece in half lengthwise and iron to create a crease down the middle. Then fold each edge toward that middle crease. Fold in half again.
Step 12:
Sew along both edges. Press flat with hot iron.
Step 13:
Fold the handle in half and insert into the opening. Clip or pin into place.
Step 14:
Top stitch around the edge of the entire piece making sure to sew over the handle loop.
