Pajama Pants
Step 1: Mark and cut the fabric
Fold the fabric in half. Layout the pattern to ensure your don't waste fabric.
Using tailor’s chalk, mark the pattern on the fabric.
You will need two from piece 1 (front leg) two from piece 2 (back leg) and 4 pockets. These all need to be mirror image of each other so your fabric needs to be folded when you cut.
Cut out the fabric along the lines.
Step 2: Mark the pocket placement.
The triangles on the pattern are there to show you how to line up the pattern. Mark these with tailor’s chalk or a pin or snip a tiny cut in the middle of the triangle.
Use tailor’s chalk to mark the pocket pattern. Cut out the pockets. You’ll have two pieces for each side. Mark the triangles on the pocket pieces as you did on the pant legs pieces.
Step 3: Pin pockets
Place straight edge of one pocket piece right sides together with Back Leg, lining up pocket markings on pocket piece and leg pattern piece. Pin in place.
Step 4: Attach pockets
Sew pockets to pants using a straight stitch. Go back over edge with a zigzag stitch.
Open pocket outward and use an iron to press seam toward pockets.
Repeat with other Back Leg and both Front Legs.
Step 5: Topstitch Pockets
On Front Legs only, topstitch seam allowance to pocket piece. Repeat with other Front Leg piece. This will help the pockets stay pushed forward.
Step 6: Sew outseam
Place Front and Back Legs right side together and match up side seams and pockets. Pin together and sew.
You will stop 3/8” (1cm) into the pocket with needle down and lift presser foot to reorient toward pocket. Continue sewing around pocket, stopping and turning again at opposite side of pocket and continue with remainder of leg.
Go over edge with a zigzag stitch.
Repeat with Front and Back pieces of other leg.
Push side seam and pocket toward the Front piece and press. Repeat with other leg.
Step 7: Sew inseam
With Front and Back pieces facing, pin/clip inseam together. Sew inseams together with a straight stitch and finish edges with a zigzag stitch along the raw edge of the fabric to keep it from unraveling.
Repeat with other Front and Back piece.
Step 8: Put Legs Together
Turn one Front and Back piece right sides out.
Place leg inside the other Front and Back piece so they are right sides together.
Step 11: Line up rise and sew crotch seam
Line up front rises and pin together.
Line up back rises and pin together. Push inseam so it's toward the back and pin in place.
Sew the crotch seam. Sew the entire seam from front waist to back waist. Finish seam with a zigzag stitch.
Go over the crotch with a second row of stitching to help reinforce the seam. This will help the pants last longer.
Step 12: Cut and Line Up Elastic
Put a piece of elastic around your waist to determine how much you need.
Fold in half and mark center. Then fold again and mark quarters.
Line up one quarter mark with a side seam. Pin. Line up other quarter mark with other side seam. Pin. The ends should be at the center back.
Step 13: Sew waistband
Using the video as guidance, use a zigzag stick to sew top of elastic to top of waist. Fold down twice. Then straight stitch all the way around.
Step 14: Hem
With pants inside out, turn bottom of leg in ¼ inch and press with iron. Turn again 1 inch. Sew hem with a straight stich. Repeat on other leg.
