Introduction to Sewing
Class Supplies
All of the required supplies for this class will be provided. If you want a special fabric, you will need to purchase your own.
Be mindful of your use of fabric and other supplies. Do not throw away anything that can still be used for another project.
Only use the designated fabric for each project.
Do not take any fabric from the storage area without permission.
Supply Box
Each student will have a numbered pencil box with the items below. These items should be kept in your box and returned at the end of the semester. We have extra clips and pins for big projects. These boxes will be kept in the sliding drawers in the cabinets.
Fabric scissors (not for paper!)
Seam ripper
thread snips
fabric pen
10 clips
10 pins
pin cushion
magnetic pin minder
threader
ruler
measuring tape
bobbin
Shared Supplies
The class shares rotary cutters, cutting mats, big rulers, irons, thread, and bobbins. We have a limited amount of each, so it's important that every person share and be mindful of your classmates' needs. These shared items need to be put away every day.
Storage Drawers and Cubbies
Each person in the class has a designed cubby for their assigned sewing machine and a drawer for other supplies. The sewing box and any projects in progress will be stored in the drawers. This includes cut fabric and patterns.
Replacement Needles
Your machine is currently equipped with a needle.
For some projects, we will switch to a different kind of needle.
Needles wear out and break. We have replacement needles; however if you regularly break needles to due to negligence or not following directions, you will be asked to purchase your own replacement needles.
Optional Supplies
You may use your own rotary cutter if you have one. Keep this in your supply box.
If you want special fabric, you may purchase your own for your projects. See each project for how much fabric you'll need. Most fabric we use is regular cotton quilting fabric.
Sewing Machines
Each student will be assigned a sewing machine. You are responsible for keeping this machine clean and put away in the designated cubby.
There are two different machine models. You will learn to use both.
I also have extra machines in my classroom if you need to work during AA.
Machine Maintenance
If your machine is malfunctioning, the first step is to rethread the entire machine including the bobbin.
You will learn basic machine maintenance. We will clean the machines at the nine weeks and the end of the year.
You should wipe it down as needed to keep it dust free.
All the newer machines have covers that should be used each day.
Safety
We will be using sewing machines, scissors, pins, needles, rotary cutters, and irons, which all have the potential to hurt you or your classmates. Use caution and common sense when using any of these tools.
Make sure irons are turned off when you are not using them.
Make sure no pins or sharp objects are left out at the end of class.
Students who endanger themselves or others will receive detentions. Repeat offenders will be referred to the office.
Daily Class
Most days we will meet in the Home Ec room. There will be some days where we are in my classroom or in the Innovation Center.
Upon arriving to class each day, you should get out your needed supplies. This includes your machine, fabric, and supply box.
When we introduce a new project, we will meet in the middle table and go through the directions together. Sometimes this will happen in my classroom.
You are expected to use the entire class period to work on your projects. If you finish early, you can help clean, organize, or work on other optional projects.
The last 5 minutes of class will be used to put everything away. Your work area including the floor should be clean when you leave.
You will need your laptop. Written instructions will be posted for every project. Some projects also have videos.
Cleaning jobs
Each student will be assigned a job to make sure the room is clean before we leave for lunch. Half the class will clean the first nine weeks and half the second nine weeks. These jobs include :
Sweeping the floor
Wiping the counters
Putting away mats, irons, rotary cutters and other shared supplies
Organizing fabric
Behavior Expectations
Be nice. Help your classmates. You will find having a partner to help you hold fabric, etc is a big help.
Take care of the sewing machines and equipment.
Use the whole class period to work.
Follow all safety rules and guidelines as explained by Mrs. Sorrell.
Follow all school rules.
No food and drinks around sewing machines, fabric, etc.

Grading
Each project will be graded on criteria specific to the skills required for that project.
Every project will be assessed on following the directions in regards to sizing, seams, etc. This includes following every step even you think it's not necessary.
You can fix any mistakes you make before you turn in a project.
You can redo any project if you have time (and enough fabric).
If you are absent or get behind on a project, you will need to come to my room during AA and use a sewing machine in my classroom.

Optional Projects
All students work on a different pace. Some students work at half the pace as others. If you are a fast efficient sewer, you may work on additional projects. We have the supplies for all of these, but you need to let me know ahead of time, so I can make sure I have them ready for you. You are also welcome to find your own projects to work on, but you will need to supply your own fabric for your own projects. You can also make extras of any of our small projects.
