Of Mice and Men

“A guy needs somebody―to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick.”

Of Mice and Men is a novella by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck lived most of his life near Salinas, California and that area is often reflected in his novels and stories. Steinbeck is known for his descriptions of these settings.

Of Mice and Men follows the story of Lennie and George, two migrant farm workers. The story is set during the Depression in Salinas Valley, California. The two men share a dream of owning their own farm instead of always having to work for someone else. The novel explores the themes of friendship and loyalty as well as the hardships some characters face with mental disabilities and racism.
