Project 4: Coffee Cup Sleeve
Supplies:
cotton or flannel fabric (two coordinating colors/patterns)
2 1/2 inch piece of elastic
button (I recommend a half-inch button)
batting
coordinating thread
scissors and fabric pen
Seam allowance: 1/4 inch
We'll be using the pattern below for a regular tapered paper/plastic cup. If you would rather make it fit a straight-sided mug or jar, you'll need to measure the mug to figure out the size. The pattern will also be straight instead of curved. This project would make a great Mother's Day Gift.

Step 1:
Select two pieces of coordinating fabric for the inside and outside of your coffee sleeve. Use the bigger paper pattern and a fabric pencil to mark the pattern on the fabric.
Step 2:
Cut out a piece of batting with the smaller pattern.
Step 3:
Put the right side of the fabrics together and then place the batting on top. Pin with four pins on top and bottom. Use the bottom middle pins to mark a 2- inch opening.
Step 4:
Cut a 2 ½ inch piece of elastic. Fold the elastic in half and put it INSIDE between the two pieces of fabric. Pin or clip in place.
Step 5:
Starting at pin you used to mark your opening (Step 2), sew around with a quarter inch seam allowance. You’ll just catch the edge of the batting. Sew all the way around to the other side of the opening. Backstitch at the beginning and the end and when you go over the elastic.
Step 6:
Clip corners.
Step 7:
Turn right side out. Use a chopstick to press out corners. Press edges with hot iron.
Step 8:
Topstitch around with an ⅛ seam allowance.
Step 9:
Measure 1 inch from the edge of the fabric to determine where your button will go. Mark with a pin or fabric pencil.
Step 10:
Sew the button on.
