Project 6: Lip Balm Holder
For this project, there are two options . See both sets of directions below.
Option 1 uses metal hardware to hold a keyring. It is very tight fitting (fits a standard size chapstick) and does not have flap to snap close. The most difficult part about this option is that if you make the seam allowance too small, your lip balm won't fit. This takes one long piece of fabric 15 x 2 1/4 inches.
Option 2 uses a fabric loop to hold the key ring. It uses two pieces of fabric for the main body, which allows you to have a different liner. It also requires you to sew a loop. This one has a flap that closes with a snap. There is a video tutorial for this one if it helps you to have a video to follow. You can do a rounded or squared flap. Choose this one if you have a large or irregular shaped chapstick.
Option 1
Supplies:
15 x 2 1/4 inch piece of fabric
15 x 2 1/4 inch piece of fusible interacing
Key Fob Hardware
coordinating thread
Step 1:
Iron the interfacing to the back side of the outer fabric. Make sure the bumpy side is on the fabric.
Step 2:
Fold in half with right sides together.
Sew on both sides with a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Step 3:
Clip corners of closed end. Turn right side out. Use chopstick to poke out corners. Press with iron.
Step 4:
Sew the raw edges with a zigzag stitch.
Step 5:
Fold the zigzagged end bottom up 1 1/4 inches. Sew two lines: ½ inch down from the fold and ⅝ inch down from the top.
Step 6:
Fold down again 2 ½ inches. Make sure the zigzagged end is hidden.
Step 7:
Double topstitch around the edge all the way around the holder: ⅛ inch and ¼ inch.
Step 8:
Put metal hardware over the end and the tools to close it over the fabric.
Option 2
Supplies:
2.5 x 9 inch piece of cotton fabric for outside
2.5 x 9 inch piece of cotton fabric for liner
2 inch square of coordinating fabric for loop
2.5 x 9 inch piece of fusible interfacing
plastic snaps
coordinating thread
split ring
Step 1:
Iron the interfacing to the back side of the outer fabric. Make sure the bumpy side is on the fabric.
Step 2:
Make the Loop. Fold the 2 inch square in half to make a crease. Fold both sides towards the crease. Press. Then fold in half again.
Sew along both sides.
Step 3:
Put right sides together. Measure down from the top 2.5 inches. Place the folded loop in between the two layers of fabric. The raw edge of the loop should be toward the outside.
Clip around outside. Mark a 2-3 inch opening on the side opposite of the loop.
Step 4:
Using a ⅜ (1 cm) allowance, sew around the edge leaving the marked opening.
Step 5:
Clip corners and turn right side out. Poke out corners with a chopstick. Press with iron making sure the corners are straight.
Step 6:
Attach snaps
Measure down half inch from the top and bottom. Mark with a fabric pen. Attach snaps in the center as shown in the photo. The top snap has the smooth side out. The bottom snap has the smooth side on the liner side.
Step 7:
Fold the bottom up 2 ¾ inches to line up with the rest of the holder. The edge should be just under the loop. Clip on both sides
Step 8:
Topstitch around the edge all the way around the holder. You can sew the bottom or leave it unsewn.
