Encanto is a disney movie that was released last November 24, 2021. The film is all about the Madrigals who were gifted with extraordinary abilities—except one, and she is Mirabel. In a not so soon occasion, she saved her family from falling down because of the crazy and toxic stigma and dynamics in their family.
The ambiance of toxicity in the film is related with the toxicity among the Filipino culture. The “black sheep”. It emphasized how people in society either family, friends or stranger actions affect one individual. In a Filipino community it’s common how most of the people compare one person to another despite the achievements and kindness he or she is showing to them. It shows how some Filipinos give unequal treatment and how they don’t cherish you in the specific circle and still see you as the ‘black sheep’ despite your so much. In the movie, the character is Mirabel.
There is also the “golden child” that is mostly seen in Filipino families which the movie showed. This is a way of giving unequal and unfair treatment to other children. The golden child is the one who gets almost the full attention of his/her parents. The golden child is the one who gets almost all that he/she wants. They are the ones who are always being favored and get all the praise. And it makes the other children feel unwanted and not enough. The role player in the film is Isabela.
If there’s the golden child, there is also the “scapegoat” wherein this person is the one who gets all the blame even though this person didn’t do anything and has nothing to do with the issue. It was portrayed by Bruno.
There’s also the “sandwich generation" that can be found in Filipino families. The scene wherein they usually rely on Luisa since she’s stronger than anyone else was also shown and evident in Filipinos. This is where they rely on their children for their retirement fund, and through passing their roles in their children especially the eldest.
These mentioned toxic stigma and dynamics were all evident in Filipino culture that must be put to an end. Year two thousand twenty three has no room for toxic people either relatives, friends, and whosoever.
