Year 9 half year courses
Year 9 students must take one technology subject but can take two. However, they may not take both Food and Nutrition and product design.
Half year option course
Students will explore the cultural design narrative used at Aotea College. They will learn to sketch and model two- and three-dimensional designs, trial computer-aided design, and technical drawing. This course will develop skills in design, digital design, numeracy, and construction.

Students will research and design their own projects using different tools and materials. They’ll learn practical design and build techniques while also focusing on safety in the workshop. The course helps students gain hands‑on experience in construction and design. Projects may involve woodworking, metalwork, ceramics, laser engraving, electronics, and 3D printing.

Get excited to design your own biotech body care product—think sustainable packaging, sleek style, and all the science behind it. Along the way, students will learn lab skills like fermentation, preservation, and processing that make their formulations both safe and eco-friendly. They’ll also hit the outdoors to forage for local medicinal plants and discover how they can power real‑world health products. By blending biotech, design, hands‑on science, and even business know‑how, this course gives students the tools to stand out and make a meaningful impact in sustainable care.

Half year option course
Students will explore core programming concepts in a user-friendly programming environment and other game related concepts. They will design and create a playable computer game and will play and evaluate each other's games. This course will develop skills in computational thinking and digital design.

Students will develop skills in pattern design, sewing, and construction to make a fashion item and a monster toy. They will also learn a range of techniques, such as screen printing, to embellish and enhance their products.

Students will explore their cultural identity through food while building foundational cooking skills and understanding key culinary terminology. They will learn and apply a range of food preparation and presentation techniques, with a strong focus on kitchen safety and hygiene. Through the design process, students will trial and refine recipes in preparation for creating a meaningful meal to share with their whānau. This course supports the development of practical skills in food technology and design, encouraging creativity, cultural expression, and confidence in the kitchen.

Year 10 half year option courses
Half year option course
Students will develop their understanding of the cultural design narrative used at Aotea College. They will learn to sketch and model, make both two and three-dimensional designs, and trial computer-aided design and technical drawing. Students will also explore the work of iconic designers and cultural taonga to understand how design enhances users' lives. This course will develop design, digital design, numeracy and construction skills.

Students will design and develop products using a range of materials. Their projects may include jewellery, carpentry, pottery and ceramics, laser engraving, electronics, and metal work. The course will further develop students' skills with tools and machinery and help them develop their knowledge of safety in Technology and skills in construction and design.

Students will develop skills in pattern design, sewing, construction, and screen printing to make a hoodie or similar garment. The course will include an emphasis on fashion drawing techniques, and students will study designers to design and create their garments.

Half year option course
Students will explore a diverse range of cultures and their associated cuisines through both theory and hands-on practical work. They will take part in a series of food trials to develop a variety of culturally inspired food products. As part of the course, students will plan, produce, package, and sell their creations at a Cultural Market Day held at school. Throughout the process, they will deepen their understanding of kitchen safety, hygiene, and risk management practices.
