Senior Courses
Level 1 and 2 English are compulsory subjects. Level 2 English is taught in two half year courses. Students are required to choose two courses, one for each half of the school year. Term 1 and 2 courses concentrate on internal standards, while term 3 and 4 courses will have at least one external. The level 2 courses with the * contain the 6 credit writing portfolio.
English 100
Full-year course
Students will study a variety of texts to explore Mātauranga Māori concepts and as the basis for both internal and external assessments. They will also develop pieces of writing, explore how context influences language, and respond to a variety of unfamiliar texts. While some content and/or themes studied will be decided between the teacher and students, all courses will include Māori and Pacific texts, voices and perspectives.

Full-year course
This course continues the study of English literature, content and concepts. Students study a range of written and visual texts, create oral texts, and closely view films. They will select an area of critical study and may complete a writing portfolio. This course supports students’ future tertiary study.
As course content and/or themes will be decided between the teacher and students, some of the credit totals may vary. Students preparing for the English Scholarship exam will be supported on a case-by-case basis.
Recommended Prior Learning: 14 Level Two English credits, including writing and one external literature standard. It is recommended that students have gained UE literacy in order to take this course.

In this course, students will look at a range of texts that have been influenced by the natural world, the environment, and the climate crisis. They will explore how people use literature and visual texts to reflect on their connection to the natural world, and how the taiao (environment) is woven throughout our experiences and histories.
