What is the problem being addressed?

Water pipeage constructed with lead is archaic and difficult to maintain since it is mostly underground. Their age makes them more vulnerable to leaks and breaks from triggers such as sudden high pressure bursts of water or rapid temperature changes. They also risk corroding into the water they carry more as they age. An unforseen spill or other event puts this old plumbing at risk of breaking or releasing its heavy metals into the water pumped into homes.

What is their innovative solution?

• Action: An ordinance was passed which required the replacement of lines identified as lead based. A reimbursement program covered the costs of the desired method of line replacement homeowners chose. All lead lines were replaced by 2012, which is today seen as the best choice that could have been made to protect from lead contamination or decay.
