What is the problem being addressed?
A town with 550 people and 150,000 hogs turns an agricultural waste product into an economic asset. By converting waste from hog farming into a local energy supply. Reynolds is working to become the first energy self-sufficient community in America. This small farming town was having economic problems, so the Department of Agriculture stepped in because they saw the potential to turn it into a “biotown”.
What is their innovative solution?
How can this be applied to Meadville?
Meadville is surround by agriculture and creates a large amount of solid waste. Biomass energy generation is an example of green innovation, which is an economic development strategy. Biomass waste has a huge potential to create energy and meadville has lots of agriculture nearby. Biomass fuel production can reduce the load on municipal wastewater infrastructure. Local farms, business owners, the city of meadville, and corporate partners would be helpful in making a facility like this happen. Researchers, possibly Allegheny College, would be necessary to see the potential benefit of having a biofuel facility.
