DIY Home Energy Savings Kit

San Jose, CA

What is the problem being addressed?

The city of San Jose wanted to reduce residential utility consumption. They did this because They wanted to reduce the cities carbon footprint and improve residence energy efficiency to save them money on utilities.

What was the solution?

    • Action: To address this the city put together Home Energy Savings Kits. Theses kits were distributed for free at local libraries. The kits included LED bulbs, low flow faucet and shower heads, outlet gaskets, weather stripping, leak detection tabs, appliance energy meter, thermal detector, thermometer, low flow rate bags and a user guide. Some items were kept, and others were meant to be returned.
    • People: The people involved was the city of San Jose environmental department, local libraries and citizens that used the kits.
    • Resources: The cost of this kit was paid for by local taxes. The cost of the competent of the kit could vary depending on what was provided.

How can this be applied to Meadville?

This would be useful because many of the homes in Meadville are over 50 years old. Cost of utilities are high in Meadville, particularly for winter heating. Not only would this plan help reduce energy use, but it could also help reduce the cost of living in Meadville. While there is a cost to do this it is relatively cheap, or as an alternative these kits could be sold at a discounted price.
