Copenhagen, Denmark

What is the problem being addressed?

The city of Copenhagen is adjacent to the ocean and during heavy storms the oceans has been surging causing the city to flood. This led to a surge of property insurance payouts that were harmful to the insurance industry.

What was the solution?

    • Action: To reduce flood risk the city focused on building infrastructure to prevent and reduce damage from flooding. They created what was called a storm surge plan which involved both the public and private sectors investing in flood resistant building and flood prevention methods.
    • People: This plan was carried out by the national government as Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark.
    • Resources: Protective infrastructure was funded by the City of Copenhagen.

How can this be applied to Meadville?

With current climate projections French Creek is likely to flood due to increased storm frequency. It is worth considering the effects and impacts of flooding in Meadville, especially after the flood caused by an ice blockage earlier this year.
