This is an earth science unit where students will learn how natural processes can change the earth's surface. They will see how the Grand Canyon was formed through slow and rapid process. Students will discover how water, wind, and ice can change our landscape by working through various experiments. Students will make observations and collect relevant data. At the end of the unit students will conduct a final group investigation. They will work to create a human interaction (dam or levee) that will protect their community from flooding. Students will design, build, test, and redesign as needed to create the best possible solution to the community flooding.
Skills and Goals:
Students will understand that:
Students will know:
4. erosion wears away earth materials.
5. deposition is the process by which eroded earth materials settle out in another place.
6. steeper slopes result in faster flowing water which has more energy and can carry larger particle sized material increasing the amount of erosion and deposition.
7. human interactions can impact the land.
Landforms Vocabulary - below are the vocabulary words for this unit.
