Coordinates, Area, Volume, and Surface Area

This unit combines parts of units 9 and 11. In this unit students will review concepts of coordinate graphing, while revisiting concepts of reflection, translations, and rotations. Students will then focus on finding area of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles. They will also learn to find area of irregular shapes that they need to break down into squares, rectangles, and triangles. Students next will find the volume and surface area of prisms, including their nets. They will also be able to name various 3-D shapes in standard form and in net form.
Skills and Goals:
- label postive coordinates on a coordinate plane
- find the area of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles
- draw shapes that have a specific area
- find the area of irregular shapes by breaking down the figure into familiar shapes
- label if something is an example of a reflection, translation, and rotation
- find the volume of a rectangular prism
- find the surface area of a rectangular prism
- name geometric solids based on a description or their net
- draw a net of a 3-D shape
- understanding edges, faces, and vertices
