A. This is Mr. V.'s 16th year of teaching all of which have been in 5th grade. This is his 15th year at Andover Elementary. He taught one year at University Ave. in Blaine before coming to Andover.
2. How much homework will my child get this year?
A. This can vary depending on the math/science unit we are working on. Typically your child will have homework each night. This will be in the form of some practice problems based on what we have been working on in class, and/or reflection questions to the day's lesson. Science homework is usually a written response to a situation that connects to our investigation that day and/or reflection questions.
3. Is homework graded?
A. Homework is not graded but gone over each day in the classroom. Homework is meant to be a practice and reflection on what your child has hopefully learned that day. Families are encouraged to work together on the homework so everyone can learn from each other.
4. What if my child's homework is not done?
A. Homework is expected to be done and turned in the next day (unless otherwise stated). If your child forgets their work or it is not done, they will fill out a "Late Assignment" slip. This will need to be signed by a parent/guardian and returned the next day. This is so that families are kept informed on their child's work. Students will also stay in from recess that day to finish or complete the assignment that is late.
5. What should I do if my child is absent or going to be absent?
A. Please send me an e-mail if you know your child is going to be gone and who I can send homework home with. This will ensure that your child does not fall behind. If you child is going to be gone for a longer period of time due to a vacation or trip out of town, let me know as far in advance as possible. I will do my best to get some work gathered together before they leave. Since my lesson plans change daily due to class needs, not all of the work we do may be sent home. They will have to get this when they come back.
6. Are there tests and and quizzes given?
A. Formal summative assessments are given at the end of each unit. This is the main grade for the unit. There will also be informal learning checks throughout the unit to see how the students are progressing and to form my intervention groups. Occasionally, there will be learning checks/quizzes in science that focus on key vocabulary.
