Fractions and Decimals

This unit is one of the biggest and most extensive units. Fractions and decimals tends to give students the most trouble and thus, more practice and time is needed. We will take a more developmental approach to this unit versus the way the curriculum has it. You may see your child bringing home Study Links that are out of order and also other supplemental materials to help practice these skills. Skills review will be posted on here and on the classroom Facebook page so families can have extra resources to help practice.
Skills and Goals:
- finding equivalent fractions using multiplication and division
- finding a fraction of a whole number
- comparing fractions and decimals to each other to determine if one is greater than, less than, or they are equal to each other
- place fractions in order from least to greatest
- change a fraction to/from a decimal
- round decimals to the nearest tenth, hundredth, or thousandth
- use fraction sticks to add fractions
- use a hundredths and tenths grid to represent adding fractions and decimals
- name specific decimals on a number line
- name the value of an underlined digit in a number
- converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and improper fractions to mixed numbers
- use a visual model to name mixed numbers and improper fractions
- solve story problems by representing a remainder as a fraction or decimal
